Employers 'need to be aware of weight discrimination'

18/01/2010

Employers need to be aware of any workers that are discriminated against in the workplace because of their weight, in news that may be of interest to those working in HR support services.

Steve Williams, head of equality services at Acas, stated that, while there are no legal standards surrounding weight discrimination in the workplace, employers need to be vigilant.

"If a colleague is being bullied in the workplace over their weight then an employer has a duty of care to deal with this and not ignore the situation," Mr Williams explained.

He advised businesses to ensure that they invest in regular training with their management staff and keep their communication skills up to date.

According to a survey conducted by Slimming World and YouGov, people who are obese are four times more likely to be bullied about their weight in the workplace than their other colleagues.

The poll also found that only 16 per cent of overweight people feel that they are supported by other employees in their efforts to slim down.ADNFCR-1800-ID-19561785-ADNFCR
