More businesses 'seeking to resolve employment disputes'
30/03/2010
Figures from Acas show that the volume of monthly calls to its helpline for employment disputes, resulting in referrals to the pre-claim conciliation (PCC) service, has almost doubled since September 2009.
The organisation estimates that more than 5,000 tribunals have been prevented in this way already, with approximately 300 referrals now being received each week.
Acas chairman Ed Sweeney said the data proves that both employees and businesses are "increasingly taking steps to avoid employment tribunals".
He added: "The earlier issues can be sorted out, the more likely people will remain in productive employment in the workplace."
The PCC service was developed by Acas in response to alterations to the Employment Act made in April 2009, when a revised Acas Code of Practice was also launched.
Changes included the right to request flexible working being extended to the parents of children aged 16 and under in England, Scotland and Wales.
