Age discrimination campaigners welcome end to retirement age

07/04/2010

The anti-ageism campaign group responded positively to the launch of a formal consultation on the default retirement age, which was confirmed by Alistair Darling in last week's Budget.

Campaign director Rachel Krys suggested that the move was long overdue.

She commented: "The EFA has been campaigning against the forced retirement of workers for many years because it is fundamentally discriminatory.

"The time has come to take age discrimination as seriously as race or sex discrimination."

Under current legislation, British employers can force people to retire at the age of 65 without a redundancy payment, even if they want to continue working.

In September 2009, a case led by Age Concern and Help the Aged against the law was defeated in the High Court, although Mr Justice Blake said there was a "compelling case" for the default retirement age to be raised.
