Age discrimination 'still occurs in recruitment process'
27/07/2010
Age discrimination is still a problem in the workplace as bosses tend to use a candidate's age against them when recruiting, an expert has said.
Campaign director for the Employers Forum on Age Rachel Krys has spoken out about the problem of age discrimination at work.
She said that while ageism has decreased in other sectors, it is still an issue in the recruitment process.
"If you talk to any 50 or 60-year-old who is in the jobs market, they feel very strongly that they might be very well-qualified but are just not even getting past the first shortlist," Ms Krys commented.
She added that while this not only unfairly discriminates against a section of society, it also does not help to encourage effective working teams.
It was suggested that a mixed-age group can provide a stronger department of employees.
Earlier this week, the Department of Communities and Local Government announced that age discrimination was experienced more often than any other labour market prejudice.
Its statistics revealed that three per cent of workers felt they had been turned down for a job because of their age.
