BGT contestant takes show to employment tribunal

22/07/2010

A Britain's Got Talent (BGT) contestant has taken the show to an employment tribunal after claiming she was a victim of disability discrimination.

Emma Amelia Pearl Czikai, 53, told the court how she was stripped of "self-respect and dignity" and humiliated by the judges when she performed her rendition of Westlife's You Raise Me Up.

BGT judge Simon Cowell informed the signer on national television that she had a "really horrible singing voice", which led to Ms Czikai taking her case to court.

She said that her poor performance was down to a medical ailment and she has been left as a target for "ridicule and hate" after appearing on the show.

The court heard how the singer, who suffers from cervical spine neuritis, was left outside in the cold before going on stage, which could have aggravated her condition and damaged her singing.

Mr Czikai has sued the producers for £2.5 million for disability discrimination - £1.25 million of which will cover her lost earnings, £1 million for compensation and £300,000 for injuries.ADNFCR-1800-ID-19902432-ADNFCR
