Bar worker launches unfair dismissal case
23/07/2010
A bar worker has lodged an unfair dismissal case against a Freemasons social club after being sacked earlier this year.
In January 2010, Gillian Borthwick was struck off as a bar worker at the Edinburgh club.
She is now lodging a legal case against the bar after suggesting that she is still owed unpaid wages and holiday entitlement, the Edinburgh News reported.
The defendant argues that as Ms Borthwick was only a contracted employee, she does not have the rights she asked for.
According to the newspaper, Ms Borthwick, who said she considered herself a full-time employee, said: "I'm not even sure what I'm entitled to, but it must be more than nothing."
She took her case to an employment tribunal earlier this week.
This comes after the Tribunals Service found earlier this month that the number of unfair dismissal claims rose by nine per cent to 57,000 between 2009 and 2010.
It also showed that the number of bosses taken to employment tribunals increased from 151,000 in 2009 to 236,100 the following year.
