HR support services 'should promote good working environments'
05/03/2010
Companies and those working in HR support services should ensure that they run a "good" workplace, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has stated.
The organisation has published advice about how best to make sure that businesses not only have a healthy workforce but also one which is fulfilled.
According to the TUC, people spend one-third of their waking hours at their place of employment, which means it is vital that they are happy in their jobs if they are to have a well-balanced and enjoyable life outside of work.
It stressed that there are also benefits to companies which make the effort to improve the working environment for their staff.
Reducing sickness rates, improving staff retention and increasing productivity are among the advantages that firms could see by promoting a "good work" environment.
Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, pointed out that there needs to be a shift in attitude in terms of businesses' approach to employee engagement.
"As long as we see 'good work' as a good idea rather than a basic human right, work will continue to make workers ill and as a result employees and society will continue to suffer," he stated.
Figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that, in 2008/09, 24.6 million working days were lost because of work-related ill health.
