HR support services staff 'need to be approachable about health problems'

08/03/2010

People working in HR support services need to make sure that other employees are able to talk to them about any health problems they may have.

Mike Petrook, head of communications at the Chartered Management Institute, explained that many people do not feel that they can tell their manager about health issues, particularly relating to mental health.

"We need to create a culture in organisations where discussing health concerns is not taboo. The reason for that is that you have got to be able to help people through these problems," he stated.

Mr Petrook's comments follow research released earlier this month by Rethink, which revealed that 59 per cent of British workers felt that they would be uncomfortable talking about a mental health problem with their line manager.

Respondents to the survey cited fear of losing their job as the main reason to avoid the discussion, while others were worried about their peers finding out and being overlooked for promotion.ADNFCR-1800-ID-19654804-ADNFCR
