Legal executive loses case for unfair dismissal
28/07/2010
A former legal executive lost his case for unfair dismissal at an employment tribunal earlier this week.
David Agar, 66, told the court that he believed the Birmingham law firm Challinors Solicitors forced him to retire even though he did not want to, according to the Birmingham Post.
After working for the company for 38 years, Mr Agar was sacked prior to his scheduled retirement date of January 22nd 2009.
He brought the case to court, claiming that he had been a victim of age discrimination.
Having heard that the solicitor firm was shedding more than 30 jobs in the company at the time, tribunal chairman Fiona Monk found the dismissal to be fair and lawful.
The newspaper reported Ms Monk as saying it was "a regrettable and unfortunate end to a long career".
Rachel Krys, campaign director for the Employers Forum on Age, said earlier this week that age discrimination still occurs in the workplace.
She noted that it was particularly prevalent in the recruitment process, with older people finding that they are "not even getting past the first shortlist".
